Equipping Northwestern Researchers to Effectively Communicate Their Science
Future Founders is a signature program of the Querrey InQbation Lab that provides research scientists with the skills needed to articulate the commercial and societal impact of their discoveries based on Northwestern University intellectual property. The ability to communicate science effectively and persuasively is essential for researchers, whether they pursue careers in academia, industry, or entrepreneurship.
Eligible participants, including graduate students, postdocs and research professors, will submit a video pitch of up to two minutes for consideration.
A cohort of early-stage scientists will participate in an intensive two-day workshop (2/12/26 and 2/16/26) featuring personalized coaching led by Kellogg Clinical Professor Michael Foley. The sessions will focus on:
- Persuasion Skills: Structuring ideas logically and concisely to deliver a compelling message
- Performance Skills: Enhancing deliver through voice, eye contact, gestures, stance, and movement
- Presentation Design: Crafting persuasive presentations tailored to audience needs
- Audience Involvement: Using data, stories and visuals to capture attention and convey impact
- Slide Design: Creating visually appealing and easy-to-understand slides
- Executive Presence: Establishing credibility and authenticity as a scientific leader
The program will culminate in the Future Founders Spotlight on Thursday, March 19, where finalists will deliver their refined pitches to a live audience.
Top presenters will receive executive coaching, professional headshots, and cash prizes in recognition of their excellence in research communication and translational storytelling.
